Bruxism / Teeth Grinding / Teeth Clenching

What is Bruxism?

Grinding of teeth, also known as Bruxism, occurs in children as well as adults. Grinding of teeth generally occurs during sleep.

What if my child is grinding his or her teeth?

Children often grind their teeth when their teeth are erupting. This is not uncommon, nor is it a problem if the grinding is mild. The majority of cases are mild and do not require any treatment. In severe cases of grinding, the child may develop a malocclusion, or improper alignment of teeth. Malocclusion may lead to TMJ problems or to a need for orthodontic treatment. In these cases, a mouth guard or night guard may indicated. The good new is that most children outgrow bruxism. If you have any concerns about your child’s bruxism, be sure to discuss this with your pediatric dentist.
